Neutrinos are particles with hardly any interactions. Their interaction probability is so small that most of the time they can pass right through the earth escaping detection. For this reason, it is difficult to gather much information about them. On the other hand, neutrinos are readily available. They are copiously produced in the sun, in cosmic rays, and even in laboratories. Three types of neutrinos are known, v_e, v_μ, and v_τ. To compensate for the small interaction cross-sections, detecting systems have to be huge in size and must use intense neutrino beams. This has not deterred scientists and now the fruits of their labour are coming forth and unexpected results have forced a rethink of several basic issues.
