The three books reviewed in this article, DIY Citizenship: Critical Making and Social Media (Ratto et al. 2014), The Art of Critical Making: Rhode Island School of Design on Creative Practice (Somerson et al. 2013), and Designing Culture: The Technological Imagination at Work (Balsamo 2011) all take a similar rhetorical approach. Using critical analysis, personal reflection, and thick descriptions of individual projects, the authors situate a variety of sociotechnical artifacts within relevant discourses in new media criticism, human-computer interaction, sociology, and education. The individual projects discussed run the gamut of activities that collectively define the Maker Movement: bespoke electronics, art installations, hacktivist blogs, and beyond. The aims of each individual project are often very different, yet they all address the important question of how and where the practices of Making and a do-it-yourself (DIY) mentality are influencing social evolution. Taken together, these works are all deeply concerned with understanding what it takes to be an engaged, informed, capable, and participating citizen in the twenty-first century.
