Among model organisms, zebrafish are arguably the best suited for in vivo studies of brain activity. Not only are zebrafish larvae transparent, even at just one week old, they exhibit an array of remarkably complex behaviors. "Their behavior is fairly well-developed at that age-more than you'd think," says neuroscientist Misha Ahrens of Janelia Farm Research Campus. "They swim around, they make decisions about where to go, where to explore. They hunt for food, they have [the capacity] for simple learning, and [they] change their behaviors based on past experience."
