In 2019, the Navy League advanced its mission of supporting the sea services through a series of programs and endeavors around the world. Navy League councils hosted and sponsored ship commission-ings across the country, adopted ships and welcomed crews back from deployments, gave awards and scholarships, and volunteered in their communities, among many other things. The organization pushed hard in early 2019 during the longest government shutdown in history to highlight the needs of the U.S. Coast Guard, whose men and women went without pay because of their classification as Department of Homeland Security employees, unlike their Department of Defense counterparts in other branches of the government.
