I'd like to bring your attention to a news story from last fall about the Broadcom Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars (MASTERS) competition. The competition is for middle school students (sixth to eighth grade) and seems to be somewhat akin to a national science fair. I don't remember knowing about science fairs when I was in grade school; perhaps because my independent science projects never went much beyond bottle rockets and invisible ink, my teachers didn't encourage me to seek out such events.
