The Schweizer family was pleased to see that the 1-26 sailplane was featured in the November 2009 issue of Soaring Magazine. My brothers, Ernie and Paul A. would be pleased to know that our 55 year old one-design class sailplane is still playing an active role in the U.S. soaring movement. Apparently, the 1-26 development was a good one.rnFor your information, from 1954 to 1979 a total of 689 of the 1-26 sailplanes were manufactured (204 were kits.) To the best of our knowledge the 1-26 was the only kit aircraft that could be FAA certified upon completion. As production and sales developed the orders for kits diminished and we found ourselves building a greater number of complete sailplanes.
