Controlling noise which is either created by the drive shaft or is transmitted through the drive shaft to the body is often a problem in front wheel drive vehicles. Shudder, one of the main concerns, is a cyclic third order axial force created by the inherent design of many plunging joints, idle boom, the other pri- mary concern, is a condition where axial vibration generated by the engine and transmission, is transmitted through the drive shaft. Several new designs have been developed in recent years which reduce plunge resistance and thus isolate engine and cyclic noise.
