It should be the best of times for International Space Station research. On April 18, an Atlas 5 launched a Cygnus spacecraft to the ISS, whose cargo included nearly 1,000 kilograms of science experiments for the station. Among the cargo was an updated greenhouse called the Advanced Plant Habitat and an experiment to test the effectiveness of an anti-cancer treatment. NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the non-profit that manages the portion of the ISS designated a national laboratory, have been working for years to encourage increased research on the ISS. That is now paying off in terms of the greater number and diversity of experiments flying to the station. But those who rely on NASA funding for that research may soon face a new threat.
