The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) intends to hold a new competition for a contract worth at least $1 billion for the operations and sustainment of its Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, the agency announced in a Jan. 29 posting on the Federal Business Opportunities Web site.rnBoeing Integrated Defense Systems of St. Louis has been the prime contractor on the GMD system since 1998, responsible for both the development and operations, and sustainment of the primary U.S. continental missile shield. In March 2008, the MDA announced it would split the GMD development work from the operations and sustainment work. The agency at that time said it intended to issue Boeing a sole-source operations and sustainment contract covering 2009 through 2013, saying the company was the only "qualified source to perform this effort without unacceptable delay to critical program schedules and unaffordable duplication of costs."
