French law enforcement authorities have launched an embezzlement and fraud investigation involving the builder of Ariane 5 main-stage cryogenic tanks, which paid some $17 million for goods that were never delivered, according to the company. The company, Cryospace of Les Mureaux, France, is a joint venture between Astrium Space Transportation and Air Liquide. Cryospace spokeswoman Corinne Estrade-Bordry said Feb. 26 that the company would have no comment on the matter because of the ongoing investigation, but she said Cryospace has tightened its accounting system to prevent a recurrence of the scheme.
