In the midst of its delayed procurement of a low Earth-orbiting satellite for monitoring space objects, the U.S. Air Force is planning a spacecraft that would carry out the same function from a much higher geosynchronous orbit, according to service officials. The proposed Orbital Deep Space Im-ager would track and inspect objects in high orbits, said Air Force Gen. Lance Lord, commander of Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs, Colo. It is more ideally suited to that purpose than the Space Based Space Surveillance System (SBSS), which will operate at a lower altitude, he said.
