U.S. Air Force Space Command is working with the Missile Defense Agency to study whether one of the agency's top priorities, a planned long-range target discrimination radar based in Alaska, could be used for space situational awareness (SSA). Navy Vice Adm. James Syring, the MDA's director, told lawmakers in written testimony March 24 that Air Force officials are studying design and operational alternatives for a new long-range discrimination radar. The radar will be used primarily to identify threats from the Pacific region but could also provide space tracking capabilities, Syring said.
