摘要

An aeronautical engineer by training, Glynn Lunney played a key role in steering NASA through the first American crewed space flights in Earth orbit, then on to the Moon landings and the Space Shuttle. For the duration of the Apollo programme, Lunney was chief of the Flight Director's Office and leader of the Black Team at Mission Control. In 1968, he had serious issues to handle with Wally Schirra, the commander of the first Apollo flight. Apollo 7 was to test Americas new spacecraft in Earth orbit, but Schirra publicly rebelled at the workload and what he regarded as time-wasting activities such as TV broadcasts. His team knew things were getting bad when the unflappable Lunney started tapping his pencil on his desk. He remained cool throughout and crew member Walt Cunningham would later describe Lunney as "the best flight director in the business".
