In his 1962 book Strategy and Structure, the late Alfred D. Chandler articulated a famous epigram: "structure follows strategy." He defined structure as "the design of organization through which the enterprise is administered."[1] Chandler observed that companies refashion their organizations in order to support the implementation of changes in their strategies. That observation has since become part of generally accepted business wisdom: define the business strategy first and then redesign the organization.
