The paper introduces what challenges caused by changes in the sugar industry the Research Institute of the Hungarian Sugar Industry had to face during the 90s. As a result of discussions with sugar producers the Institute has transformed its activity according to the changed requirements. Its most important work is to take part in the EU accession process, especially to represent the interest of the Hungarian sugar industry in legislative allignment in field of technics. The projects carried out by the Institute are introduced in details, including the targets, the tasks and the results of year 1999 and the first quarter of 2000. Processes of setting the target and controlling the work are shown briefly. Beyond the common tasks the specific sugar industrial and non sugar industrial activities are listed. It is presented how the organisation changed owing to the changed tasks. The experiences are evaluated, and it is declared that the Research Institute can have a significant role in the work originated from the EU accession.
