The need for growth in electricity storage is so crucial for clean energy that it got a passing mention even in Pope Francis' "encyclical" in May this year - an influential letter on climate change and global poverty addressed to all human beings. The International Energy Agency had said a few months earlier that to support global electricity sector decarbonisation, an estimated 310 GW of additional grid-connected electricity storage capacity would be needed in the United States, Europe, China and India. What's clear is this: if the world wants to keep climate change well below a 2 degree increase over pre industrial temperatures - widely seen as a key threshold to avoid the most catastrophic impacts - then solar photovoltaic and wind power need to penetrate electricity markets much more deeply. A lot of innovation is therefore needed in demand side integration, storage and smart grid infrastructure.
