Written with Nader Mousavizadeh, Interventions is the story of Kofi Annan's career at the UN. It is an account of both his personal achievements and those of the organisation since the end of the Cold War. The first UN staff member to become secretary-general, a position he held from 1997-2006, Annan was appointed under-secretary-general for peacekeeping operations in 1994, and served as special representative to the former Yugoslavia for five months. The book's title is telling: under Annan, the term 'intervention' was transformed to cover a wide ambit of activities, ranging from traditional peacekeeping to war. It is also ironic, because Annan's career is in some ways characterised by the UN's failure to intervene in two conflicts: Rwanda in 1994 and Syria in 2012.
