Coined by Joseph Schumpeter in the 1940s, the term 'creative destruction' describes a continual process whereby the existing socio-economic order is completely disrupted through innovation. Examples of creative destruction include the invention of the printing press, the automobile, the personal computer and the Internet - all of which made older technologies obsolete (or dramatically reduced their importance). The effect is widely regarded as an inherent part of capitalism that allows progress to emerge from turmoil.
