An unique fuel cell cogeneration system using biogas generated from the brewery effluent began operating at Sapporo's Chiba Brewery in June 1998. Fuel cell cogeneration systems have low nitric Oxide emissions and can achieve high generation efficiency and heat Recovery rates with rather small-scale facilities, thereby providing an Environmentally friendly system. The new technology of this project Is the use of biogas generated form organic wastes rather than from Fossil fuel gases (city gas, LPG) to run the fuel cells, further mitigat- Ing environmental loads on the earth.
