One of the UK's largest retailers, Worksop-based Wilko, has launched a scheme for the collection and recycling of single-use face masks.Through the scheme - which will be run in partnership with ReWorked(1) of South Milford and Metrisk Ltd of Allerton Bywater, both in the UK, until 1 July 2021 - Wilko customers will be able to dispose of their used face coverings in bins located at 150 participating shops (Wilko has 416 shops in total).Face masks collected through the scheme will be sent to ReWorked for processing. After a quarantine period of at least 72 h, the masks are washed and shredded into 5-mm pieces before being mixed to a specific formula with other waste plastic. The mixture is then heated to over 200°C and pressed into durable boards, which can be used in construction, for the manufacture of furniture and for the production of bins for the collection of more waste plastics.
