A German manufacturer of knitting machinery is working with researchers in the UK to create a balaclava that warms the air being inhaled through it to reduce the risk of athletes, such as runners and skiers, contracting chest infections while exercising in winter. Reutlingen-based Stoll GmbH and the Advanced Textiles Research Group (ATRG) at Nottingham Trent University have created a prototype that uses a battery connected to electrically conductive yarns knitted into the headgear to warm a mesh in front of the athlete's mouth.
