The difference between Gold and Silver Medals at an Olympic Games is measured in mere fractions of a second. Nick Butler attended a dedicated conference to learn more about some of the textiles used to give athletes an extra edge. Timed to coincide with the build-up to the Beijing Games in August 2008, the UK's Technitex and Materials Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) organized a one-day conference: Textiles at the Olympics, which they held at the Institute of Materials, London, UK, on 4 July. In his opening remarks, Honorary Chairman of Technitex, Simon Haskell, told attendees that this was an opportunity for them to learn more about the potential for textiles and clothing in sports and leisure related applications, with a clear eye on the possibilities of developments over the next four years in time for the London Olympic Games in 2012.
