With Artus, the ARTificial UteruS, experts at the Hohenstein Institute, Bonnigheim/Germany, have developed an artificial uterus, which helps premature babies to develop by providing sensory stimulation. It can recreate the environment and sensory stimulation of a mother's womb in the incubator. Acoustic stimuli like the mother's heartbeat and voice are transmitted to the premature baby, together with mechanical sensations like the gentle rocking experience in the mother's body. The aim of the project is to improve the clinical well-being of the little patients. This can be assessed in a standardized way by using stress measurements. The components heart rate, respiration, response to touch, muscle tone and skin color are measured at regular intervals and, depending on the result, given a score for each.
