A memorandum of understanding (MoU) which the government is considering to conclude with the American multi-national company Monsanto for introducing insect-resistant Bt cotton and other advanced seed technologies in Pakistan has riled up cotton farmers. Five farmers' organisations-Farmers of Pakistan, Pakistan Kisan Board, Pakistan Kisan Committee, Anjuman Kashtkaran and Action Aid-are in the forefront opposing the deal on the ground that 77 million people in the country are food insecure.
