India's fast expanding automobile industry is providing a vast market for automotive textiles; and the Italians were in full force in the country recently to position themselves for claiming a sizeable slice of it. To promote the application of contemporary Italian automotive textile technology in Indian automotives, the Italian Trade Commission (ICE) together with the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT) and the New Delhi-based technical textile consultancy firm, Business Coordination House (BCH), organised a symposium on January 22 in New Delhi attracting representatives of key players across the automotive textile industry value chain and the traditional textile industry, auto industry giants like Maruti, Tata, Honda, BMW, etc., suppliers of various products to the industry as well as regulatory bodies and researchers. The passenger car section of the Indian auto industry ranks among the top ten in the world with annual sales of over two million vehicles. It has enormous growth potential as the country currently has more than 300 million middle-class people with disposable whose and their number is steadily rising.
