摘要

The 51st annual general meeting of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council was held in Mumbai on September 30, 2005, with Mr Shankersinh Vaghela, Union Textile Minister, as the chief guest. Mr. B.K. Patodia, Chairman of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council, dwelt on the strong macro-economic fundamentals of the Indian economy with the real gross domestic product estimated to have grown by 6.9 per cent in 2004-05. He noted that in spite of spiraling international prices of oil, the performance of the economy was driven by improvements in the industrial and service sectors, buoyancy in exports, growing investor confidence, rising foreign exchange reserves and controlled inflation. He observed that undoubtedly the most significant development concerning international trade in textiles and clothing was the elimination of quotas from January 1, 2005, ending four decades of quantitative restrictions. As had been forecast by analysts, China and India had shown positive growth in their export performance after the removal of quotas.
