The purpose of this special mini-section of The China Quarterly has been to review some of the issues relating both to our own understanding of the meaning of the High Tide and of connections between events 50 years ago and issues of economic policy in China today. In doing this, most of the participants of the conference were familiar with the ten-year retrospect commissioned by Roderick MacFarquhar and prepared by Kenneth Walker during 1965-66. This paper remains a benchmark in studies of China's rural development and it is remarkable how many of its conclusions stand today, in spite of an avalanche of more recent scholarship based on sources not available at the time. One reason for this is that Walker's concerns were primarily economic and agrarian, whereas much recent material is concerned only with political issues - especially intra-Party conflict, the role of Mao, and the chain of events connecting the High Tide with the Great Leap Forward.
