A Class 317 unit owned by train-leasing company Angel Trains has undergone a number of major changes and is being used to gauge public reaction. The demonstrator comes hot on the heels of the reworked Class 321 EMU shown off by Eversholt (Christmas issue, p97). Angel chief executive Malcolm Brown confirmed that the company had trains on lease at various stages of their life cycles, and although it was keen to buy new trains, the work on the 317 was an opportunity to enhance, renovate and improve reliability. Even though the investment in the demonstrator has been £7million and will reduce with economies of scale when in full production, Mr Brown did describe it as a "more for less" activity. He added that Angel was taking the opportunity to develop what looked like a new train from an old one, with a better ambience and greater capacity.
