Trains and railways have been a remarkably enduring feature of popular music over the years and many famous musicians have been influenced by their sounds, especially by the rhythm of the steam locomotive. Since the 19th century, more than 1,000 popular songs have either been named after railway subjects or have referred to them in their lyrics. In Britain in the swinging 'sixties, the famous pop group The Kinks released a record entitled Last of the Steam Powered Trains in 1968 to coincide with the end of steam on British Railways. It was a follow-up to their massive hit Waterloo Sunset, which referred to Waterloo main line and Underground stations and had been released the year before, just as steam was ending on the South Western main line. Both were composed by Kinks' vocalist Ray Davies, who related in a recent BBC4 documentary that he has very fond memories of steam. His song came back into the limelight in 2007 when the departure of Eurostar from the former LSWR terminus saw a Class 373 set officially named Waterloo Sunset.
