Conflict seems to be endemic in the human condition, peace rarely breaks out. Throughout recorded history, warfare has been the norm. To be more precise, peace has to be established. It is an order, which persists as long as it is generally accepted; or those who find it unacceptable do not have the capacity to change it. Much the same could be said about crime. It may fluctuate in frequency and intensity but it is always present. This article looks beyond the conventional meaning of conflict and marks its existence not only across the globe as war but also in civil society. It also offers some very tentative suggestions about how conflict might be moderated. In the animal world, both carnivore and herbivore, conflict occurs over territory, food and sex. To this menu, the human world adds commercial gain (linked to territory and resources), and also ideology and religion.
