I have been in command of NATO / ISAF operations on the ground in Afghanistan for almost three months now, and my Headquarters and I spent the eighteen months leading up to our deployment training, preparing and familiarizing ourselves with the country and the mission in order to be thoroughly prepared for what lay ahead. HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC), of which I am the commander, and from which the current HQ ISAF is largely drawn, espouses the principles of NATO Transformation. We have practiced the Effects Based Approach for the past two years or more and pride ourselves on our multi-nationality, the strong links within the HQ staff and with our subordinate commands, our expeditionary ethos, and our harnessing of advances in technology.
