Pressing is probably the least understood aspect of sewing, and is the one process that is often rushed or neglected. I believe fine sewing requires as much time spent at your ironing board as at your sewing machine-without pressing, you will not achieve the satisfying end results we all desire. Until recently commercial pressing equipment was very expensive, so the home sewer rarely had an opportunity to learn the advantages of using such machines. However, gravity feed and boiler system irons and vacuum boards-all similar to those used in the garment industry―have been introduced to the home-sewing market. Like the sophisticated sewing machine and serger, these improved irons and boards raise the bar of sewing excellence. Once you learn how they differ from a standard iron and board and also understand the essential components of pressing, you'll see why these ironing systems make it easy to smooth a wrinkle, set a crease, and achieve a finely finished garment with that straight-from-the-dry-cleaner look.
