Once upon a time the U.S. had been the laughing stock for any a European observing the strange American way of handling the tobacco question. Nobody understood how freedom-loving Americans could ever surrender to militant anti-smoking guns and to the ridiculous restrictions of public smoking. Times have changed. US-style anti-smoking policy has gained ground in old Europe with little resistance from an industry that is seeking a level playing field in global tobacco regulation.
