It was the early 1930s. And after graduating from Yale where he made the freshman and junior varsity football teams and played 150-pound football de- spite being a slight 130 pounds, Joseph Cullman 3rd was about to enter the real world of the tobacco business. Having already spent his college summers as a salesman for Webster Cigars, Cullman became a cigar-store clerk for Schulte's, a New York City-based retail chain.
