Visual Cognitive Performance Model of Drivers - Age-Based Estimation of Reading Time of Kanji Characters

This article describes a study performed to clarify the relationship between age and visual recognition performance of kanji (Japanese) characters displayed on an on-board information device while driving. In the study, kanji characters were randomly displayed in two-character compounds on a personal computer screen, and the number of characters was changed in three steps. The relationship between gazing time and the number of characters was then investigated for 130 subjects in age groups from 20 to 80. The gazing time was divided into two categories: the preparation time required for accommodation, and the information processing time. The results of the study showed the effects of aging. The trend for preparation time was found to be proportional to the square of the age of the subject. Processing speed, however, was virtually unaffected by the age of the subject, and the average speed obtained in the study showed a good agreement with previous reports. From these results, a new model for estimating reading time based on age and the amount of information is proposed.
