Southeast Queensland (SEQ) is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, fuelled principally by migration from the southern states. The region has experienced significant population growth over the last two decades, growing on average by 55,000 persons a year. This growth equates to 1000 new arrivals to the region every week. Current growth trends are expected to continue into the future, and the regional population is estimated to reach 3.7 million by 2026. The infrastructure to support such growth and overall population numbers is a key issue for local authorities, with the state government of Queensland recently establishing a plan to manage and prioritise the infrastructure needs of SEQ. The provision of road networks, transit oriented developments and public transport facilities for the significant population growth in SEQ is a priority for the Local and State Government.rnAddressing transportation problems involves a complex interplay between technology; human perception; cognition and behaviour; and social, economic and political systems. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is a broad term used for a range of technologies including processing, control, communication and electronics, which are applied to a transportation system. ITS tools are expected to improve safety and efficiency of the transportation network, while slowing the trend towards worsening congestion. This is achieved by applying information technology, and other advanced methods and techniques to improve a transportation system's performance and to increase these systems' contribution to the'economic and social well-being.rnThis paper focuses on the ITS tools currently operating within the public transport system (CityCat, bus, train, ferry) of SEQ. The paper reviews the increased application of intelligent transport systems within the public transport system of SEQ. The paper reviews the advancements made, the motivation for authorities to apply these technologies and the perceived and actual limitations to the use of these clever tools.
