In this paper, twin tunnelling-induced surface settlements in drained granular soils were studied using 1 g physical models. A mechanical device was developed to achieve the simulation of a sequential twin-tunnelling process. The centre to centre spacing S between the two tunnels and the magnitude of the tunnel volume loss V-t were the two main variables considered in the experimental study. The relative difference between the settlements observed in the two tunnel events was presented in detail in terms of parameters including the maximum surface settlement S-max trough width i, and soil volume loss V-s, whereby the twin-tunnel interaction and its effect on the surface settlements due to the second tunnel in drained soils were made clear.
