A friend who's a veteran government relations practitioner has a favorite saying. "I've got regulation. I think everybody should have it." He's only half joking, because his job includes discouraging the government from establishing rules that might inhibit innovation and growth in the industries in which his clients conduct business. On the other hand, regulation can provide certainty and promote fair competition, which are the type of rules the unmanned systems industry needs to continue on a path toward long-term success and commercial viability. I recently joined the AUVSI staff as vice president of advocacy and public affairs to lead and coordinate public policy initiatives on behalf of our more than 7,500 members. My mission is to support the association's efforts to influence the regulation and other public policies that will shape the future of the industry.
