They say small is beautiful - and cost effective too. This year's UAS 2010 Symposium, hosted by the United Kingdom Royal Air Force station at Cranwell on 1 July, focused on civil-military synergies and included a demonstration of man-portable, small unmanned aircraft designed for both emergency services and the military.rnDelivering the keynote address, Air Vice-Marshal Steve Hillier highlighted the problem of public perceptions about "PlayStation warfare." Hillier commands No. 2 Group (a two-star appointment), which embraces intelligence, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance (ISTAR) assets based at RAF Waddington. He said the military needs to emphasize people-in-the-loop and "explain what is involved," adding that once unmanned systems are more visible in civilian roles, the public will "gain a better understanding" of how they work.
