Right about this time last year I was traveling in Iraq with a small group of reporters to examine the use of unmanned aircraft there. At one point, we needed to fly from Kuwait to Baghdad in a C-130 transport aircraft but we kept running into a snag: The massive plane didn't want to fly.rnWe taxied forever at first, to the point that we thought maybe we were just driving to Baghdad, but then we came back. One of the aircraft's four engines had developed a malfunction. After repairs were made, we piled back on the plane again, only to be turned away once more, as another engine failed.rnThe aircraft had been built in the early 1960s and was older than anyone aboard. One of the maintenance crewmembers said his father had worked on C-130s in the Sixties and Seventies and once joked to his son, "If we knew you'd still be flying these things, we'd have taken better care of them."
