General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) recently passed a major milestone, delivering the one-hundredth Predator Medium-Altitude, Long-Endurance (MALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to the U.S. Air Force. Originally designed as a reconnaissance system, the RQ-l/MQ-1 Predator UAV took on a new role when it was equipped with Hellfire missiles in 2002 for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan. That role was continued and expanded during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in 2003, where it helped elevate the UAV concept in general to a new position of tactical indispensability. "There is no question the Predator has proven its value across the spectrum, from ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) to attack to FAC (forward air control) missions," says USAF Lt. Col. Eric Mathewson, chief of the UAV Special Missions Office, Air Combat Command, LangleyAFB, VA.
