The importance and sophistication of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) is increasing as the unmanned systems are fitted with sophisticated avionics and sensors and are asked to perform autonomous operation in complex, crowded environments. Sophisticated, lightweight, heavy fuel engines are also on the horizon. D-STAR Engineering of Shelton, CT has two approaches to heavy fuel engines for UAVs and UGVs: custom designed and built diesel-fueled engines and the AVX Ultra-High-Bypass Turbofan. The best choice depends on the tradeoffs between weight, fuel consumption and cost.
