The UK currently operates but one UAV type, the British Army's Phoenix. This system was acquired for artillery observation duties but its roles soon expanded to include the broader area of Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR). The potential contributions of UAVs to land forces operations were made obvious and the Watchkeeper program aims to acquire not one but two UAVs to cover this range, i.e. to provide ISTAR for land forces ranging in size from the division to battle group. Apart from the UAV itself, an intelligence distribution system would also be included Watchkeeper is expected to be an important element of the UK's post-September 11 network-centric focus. The UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) requirement has been under constant flux, but it aims to achieve Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in 2005 and Full Operational Capability (FOC) within a further three years.
