Globalization, consolidation, and deregulation— the mantra of investment banking's major players. While the future is open to speculation, the big banks belicve those three words are the key to their long-term health and prosperity. Globalization is a given nowadays, says Amanda Gimblc, co-head of corporate strategy and planning at Merrill Lynch. Three of the top nine investment banks are headquartered overseas: the Swiss duo, Credit Suisse First Boston and UBS Warburg, and Germany's Deutsche Bank. "Our businesses and the financial-services markets are global," Gimble says. "The clients are global. There are no geographical boundaries anymore."
