So what, in the end, is it that makes Silicon Valley the place it is? Is it something in the air, or something about our environment? Why is the San Francisco Bay area the place about which someone, somewhere, asks several times each day, "How did they do that there?" The answer has a great deal to do with the University of California system and Stanford University. You might view the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), as having a greater impact on the theoretical sciences, while Stanford University has had more of an impact on the application of sciences, but that is too simplistic a view of the situation—analogous to merely remembering that Ernest Orlando Lawrence was developing the cyclotron while Frederick Terman at Stanford was helping William Hewlett and David Packard to find the money to start Hewlett-Packard.
