The concept of 'Welfare' and what is meant today by this term is a subject of discussion, both in public, political and scientific debate. In welfare discourses, a language - made up of several buzzwords strongly used and abused - has been codified. Inspired by A Vocabulary of Culture and Society (1976) by Raymond Williams, but in an innovative format, Paul Michael Garrett chooses for his new book, Welfare Words. Critical Social Work & Social Policy, seven of these crucial keywords. Thus, he explores the origins, the different meanings and the hidden contradictions of each word by using a grounded theoretical approach but also a set of predominantly Irish, English and American news items that are emblematic to highlight the way these welfare buzzwords are nowadays used and - often - misused.
