Every so often, a book emerges to cover a chapter in vertical flight history that has previously gone virtually untouched; the latest offering from veteran author and aviation historian, Donald J. Porter, is just such a book. Over the years, much has been written about famed entrepreneur, philanthropist and billionaire playboy Howard R.Hughes,Jr., covering everything from his lavish and eccentric lifestyle to his bevy of Hollywood leading ladies and his later years as a troubled recluse. Coverage of his involvement in aviation has usually focused on his repeated attempts at setting aviation speed records and his unauthorized one-time flight of the gargantuan HK-1 Hercules flying boat, better known as the Spruce Goose. Although books on individual Hughes' helicopters have been published, a comprehensive telling of Hughes' contributions as a major helicopter manufacturer has been missing until now.
