Nearly 60 years after NASA first flew a variable-stability helicopter with parallel electrical and mechanical controls, and 10 years after the US Army's RASCAL testbed first engaged its research flight control system, only three rotorcraft in service have full-authority Fly-By-Wire (FBW) controls.The V-22 tilt rotor and NH90 helicopter use FBW to enhance stability and reduce pilot workload, notably in shipboard operations and Degraded Visual Environments.
