In the heart of central Europe lies the landlocked yet picturesque country of Austria.The country itself is predominantly mountainous due to the Alps, with only a third of its 84,000 km2 (32,000 square mile) territory being below 500 m (1,600 ft) altitude as the five main glaciers come up to an average height of 3000 m (9,800 ft). Austria is renowned not only for its legendary winter sports and the picture-postcard ski resorts in the magnificent mountains of the Tirol region (such as the Stubai glacier), but also for the tourists that come in the post ski season to visit the historic and fascinating cities of Innsbruck, Salzburg for Mozart's birthplace and the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and then further to the east the capital, Vienna.
