Understanding the potential damage a natural disaster such as an earthquake can cause to a water supply system is necessary for a utility to prioritise interventions and react quickly to rehabilitate a system after such an event. Savvas Xanthos, Michalis Fragiadakis and Symeon Christodoulou present a methodology to assess the seismic reliability of urban water distribution networks, which combines data from past non-seismic damage with the vulnerability of the network to earthquake damage.
